Firebirds still winless

Topeka High shuts out sluggish FSHS

? Free State High’s girls soccer team still is seeking its first victory after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Topeka High on Thursday at Hummer Sports Complex.

The Firebirds (0-3) were coming off a 1-0 double-overtime setback in the intracity game against Lawrence High on Tuesday.

“I would say that we did not play with the same zeal that we exhibited throughout the match against our crosstown rivals,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said, “and that’s not acceptable, because we have to compete much better than that if we are going to have any sort of success.”

Pendleton cited freshman midfielder Logan Keasling and goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir for their play against the Trojans.

Free State will play host to Olathe Northwest at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kansas University’s Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
