Free State High’s softball team will be hoping for better luck today after bowing to the defending Class 6A state champs in their season openers Tuesday.

The Firebirds will play host to Olathe South at 3:30 p.m. today after suffering lopsided losses to powerful Olathe East on Tuesday at the FSHS field.

Alex Hupp, who won last year’s 6A championship game, fanned 10 Firebirds as the Hawks captured the opener, 11-1. Free State’s only hit was a solo homer by Jamie Stanclift.

In the second game, Hupp’s younger sister, Melissa, held the Firebirds to singles by Stanclift, Livi Abney and Ashley Wagner in an 11-0 triumph.
