To the editor:

While we mourn the passing of Pope John Paul II, let us not forget that he was staunchly opposed to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent war. He made the following address at the Vatican just after the attacks began: "When war, as in these days in Iraq, threatens the face of humanity, it is ever more urgent to proclaim, with a strong and decisive voice, that only peace is the road to follow to construct a more just and united society. Violence and arms will never resolve the problems of man."
