Firefighters battle East Lawrence blaze

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical personnel were continuing to battle a vacant house fire early this evening in east Lawrence.

Flames burst from an upper-story window of a house fire this evening in the 1300 block of New Jersey Street.

Firefighters were called about 5:30 p.m. to a house at 1321 N. J.

Traffic was reduced to one lane along the 1300 block of New Jersey Street as three firetrucks and other emergency vehicles were responding.

According to Rob Hamm, who lives in the neighborhood, flames could be seen coming out of a window or a vent of the house, which had at least two stories.

Firefighters battle a house fire early this evening at 13th and New Jersey streets.

“The smoke was kind of thick, so it was hard to see. You could see that flames were shooting out of a window or a vent,” Hamm said.

Other neighbors who were watching the fire told 6News that the home was vacant, but some transients had been staying there.
