Delivery-driver charges leave suspects baffled

Defendants make first court appearance

The suspects in a series of pizza delivery-driver robberies reacted with bewilderment Tuesday during their first court appearances.

“Some of these crimes I didn’t commit,” said Phillip J. Richardson, 18, of Kansas City, Kan.

“I had nothing to do with half the stuff on here,” said Cyrus R. Mueller, 19, of Lawrence.

A third suspect, Nicholas A. Moore, 22, of Lawrence, smiled throughout his appearance and said he wanted to ask Douglas County District Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel a question. She told him to answer her questions instead.

Prosecutors charged Richardson and Mueller with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery for an incident Thursday in which a Pizza Shuttle driver was lured to a vacant home in the 3700 block of Overland Drive, then beaten and robbed.

All three men were charged with robbing another Pizza Shuttle driver of his cell phone in a similar incident early Monday in the 3800 block of Shadybrook Lane.

Lawrence Police said they caught the men Monday morning after an investigation revealed they had been calling for pizza from a pay phone at Hy-Vee, 3504 Clinton Parkway.

All three men also are charged with stealing two cars Monday: a 1981 Jeep and a 1991 Toyota Camry.

Two juveniles arrested in the case will have detention hearings today.

Kittel set bond at $50,000 for Mueller and $60,000 for Richardson, who both said they had no criminal history.

Assistant Dist. Atty. Bethany Daniels asked for a higher bond for Moore, in part because of a past conviction for aggravated battery. Kittel set it at $75,000.
