Draft supporters

To the editor:

Sen. John Kerry has stated that the Bush administration plans to reinstate the draft in 2005.

For some reason, Kerry failed to mention that HR163 and SB89, entitled “Universal National Service Act of 2003,” were introduced in the Senate by Ernest Hollings, Democrat, and in the House by Charles Rangel, Democrat.

Fourteen members of the House, all Democrats, are co-sponsors of HR163. No Republicans signed on as co-sponsors.

Sen. Hollings, Democrat, is the lone sponsor of SB89.

SB89 and HR163 have been residing in committee since introduction in 2003.

To date, no Republicans have called for reinstatement of the draft.

It’s curious that Kerry has not told “the rest of the story” on this issue.
