Teen arrested in car break-ins

Lawrence Police on Wednesday arrested a 17-year-old boy allegedly caught stealing from three cars in the 2400 block of West 24th Terrace in southern Lawrence.

They’re looking into whether he’s linked to a series of other auto thefts earlier in the month: some discovered Monday morning on fraternity row near Kansas University and some discovered Sept. 14 on Glacier and Rainier Drives near West 26th Street and Kasold Drive.

A resident called police about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after seeing two men breaking into vehicles on West 24th Street Terrace, Ward said. When police arrived, both suspects fled on foot. The 17-year-old later was captured, Ward said.

Deputy director leaving Dole Institute

Richard Konzem will leave the Dole Institute of Politics at the end of the month, a Kansas University official said Wednesday.

Bill Lacy, the institute’s director, confirmed Konzem would resign from his position as deputy director for administration. He has held the post since December.

“We hate to lose him,” Lacy said. “But we’ll support him in whatever he decides to do.”

Konzem was out of town Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

Konzem spent nearly two decades in the KU athletic department, rising to the rank of associate athletic director. He resigned that position in August 2003, a month after KU hired athletic director Lew Perkins.
