Rash of auto burglaries spreads to fraternity row

Police unsure whether recent thefts are related

Lawrence Police are investigating a string of auto burglaries throughout the city, including some discovered Monday morning on Kansas University’s fraternity row.

In one of the campus-area thefts, a KU freshman’s 1999 GMC Yukon Denali — equipped with a Sony PlayStation and $1,500 speaker box with subwoofers — was taken from the 1600 block of Edgehill Road and later recovered in the East Hills Business Park with the electronics missing and a window smashed. A witness saw two males rummaging through the car and fleeing in a red Jeep Cherokee, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

“We’re hoping that somebody recognizes that description and knows who these individuals are and gives us a call,” Ward said.

The victim in that case said he’d heard of eight other thefts the same night from areas around the Phi Delta Theta house, 1621 Edgehill Road, and the Sigma Phi Epsilon house, 1645 Tenn. Reports from those cases weren’t available Tuesday, but Ward confirmed officers had been dispatched to the area to investigate at least one additional case.

On Sept. 14, police responded to at least five auto burglaries discovered on Glacier and Ranier Drives near West 26th Street and Kasold Drive. Items taken in those thefts included car stereos and cell phones, police said.

Police are looking into whether the earlier cases are related to the thefts near campus but don’t yet have any evidence to link them.

Ward asked anyone with information about the thefts to call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 843-TIPS.
