FSHS girls tennis routs Olathe South
Olathe — The Free State High girls tennis team earned a convincing win Monday, beating Olathe South, 8-2. The Firebirds’ lone losses came at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Andrea Koch, Leigh Luina, Jamie McGovern, Julia Guard, Joanna Loewen and Bridget Lavaveshkul each won singles matches, and the teams of Luina/Guard and Bock/Loewen won doubles matches.
FSHS will travel Thursday to Blue Valley.
Iowa conference honors ex-Firebird Loewen
Mount Vernon, Iowa — Cornell sophomore Emily Loewen, a 2002 Free State High graduate, was named Iowa Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week on Monday.
Loewen went 5-0 during the week, including two victories at No. 2 singles and three victories at No. 1 doubles with Marie Schutte. For the season, Loewen has a record of 6-3 in singles and 11-3 in doubles.
LHS boys soccer falls to Topeka West
Topeka — Topeka West’s three first-half goals were too much for Lawrence High’s soccer team to overcome as the Lions fell, 3-1, Monday night.
The Chargers scored three times before intermission, but the Lions (1-4) rallied with a goal by Kyle Craig off a pass from Daniel Miranda that trimmed the deficit in the second half.
LHS will travel tonight to Shawnee Mission Northwest.
