PRAIRIE VILLAGE ? Lawrence High and Free State each placed in the top five in team standings Saturday at the 15-team Shawnee Mission East Invitational.

The Lions’ second-place team performance was highlighted by Mallory West, who finished first out of 40 gymnasts in the all-around competition. She also was first in the beam and floor exercise.

For the Firebirds, who finished fourth as a team, Sindra Schueler placed third in the all-around, just .25 points behind West. Schueler was the top finisher in the vault and the bars.

LHS and FSHS return to action Saturday at a five-team event at Free State.
