LHS to induct four into Hall of Honor

Lawrence Lions Alumni Assn.'s annual ceremony to be Sunday

Three Lawrence High School graduates and one Liberty Memorial High School graduate will be honored for their accomplishments after high school during a Sunday ceremony.

The Lawrence Lions Alumni Assn. will induct three men and one woman into the Hall of Honor at 1 p.m. at LHS. The event is open to the community.

Sue Lewis, who is on the alumni association’s 12-member board, said the four were selected from among about 20 nominations. The board chooses inductees.

“We do some research and we look at accomplishments — things they’ve done post-high school,” Lewis said.

The alumni organization annually recognizes outstanding graduates who have significantly contributed to the success of Liberty Memorial and Lawrence high schools.

The inductees are:

  • Andrew K. Benton, who graduated from LHS in 1970 and has served as president of Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., since June 2000. He began working at the university in 1984.
  • Erin Pattee Brockovich-Ellis, a 1978 LHS graduate, who has worked as a legal advocate. Based in California, Brockovich-Ellis was the inspiration for the Oscar-winning movie “Erin Brockovich,” which starred Julia Roberts.
  • Ervin “Erv” Hodges, who graduated from Liberty Memorial in 1946, served the city of Lawrence on the City Commission and as mayor.
  • Roland “Ron” Hurst, a 1956 LHS graduate who is a retired electronic technologist from KU. Hurst is known as a community volunteer and advocate. He has been involved with the city’s sesquicentennial celebration and has served as a Selective Service System local board member since 1992. The Selective Service registers men in case the military draft is re-established.

Lewis said all the inductees would be at the event, except Brockovich-Ellis, who had a previous engagement.
