County buys three tornado sirens

New tornado sirens in Lawrence and Baldwin will help alert people of approaching emergencies by early next year, Douglas County commissioners decided Monday.

Commissioners agreed to spend up to $58,120 for three new outdoor warning sirens.

The sirens will be scheduled for installation by the beginning of next spring’s severe weather season. Their general locations:

  • Northwest Lawrence, generally west of Wakarusa Drive and north of Sixth Street.
  • North-central Lawrence, generally along North Iowa Street north of the Kansas Turnpike.
  • Western Baldwin, helping cover an area west of 12th Street.
