Oct. 20 is National Disabilities Mentoring Day, which gives young people with disabilities the opportunity to visit workplaces to learn first-hand about career fields that interest them. Independence Inc., the local coordinator, needs mentors in different professions to provide a one-day job shadowing experience in Lawrence. This is a great opportunity for members of the business community to connect with young people and encourage them to develop their skills and obtain the experiences necessary to compete in today’s economy.

Immediate volunteer needs

• The Lawrence school district needs volunteers for after-school programs where students can focus on reading and other subjects. Volunteers may read with a student, assist with homework, or work on other special projects. For more information, call Sandra Crowther at 832-5008, ext. 636.

l The Ballard Community Center needs a volunteer substitute chef to prepare lunch for the 58 children in the early education program. Meals are very simple and are planned in advance, so the volunteer will only need to handle the preparation and kitchen clean up. For more information, contact Diane Ensminger at 842-0729.

Golfers, donors sought for benefit tournament

A benefit golf tournament for Eliza Mae Fortner, 10-month-old daughter of Nathan and Jessica Fortner, will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

All proceeds from this event will go toward a medical fund to help Eliza, who is receiving treatment for an aggressive brain tumor.

Sponsors and golfers are needed. Sponsor donations are $100, and the sponsor name will be displayed on a sign at one of the tee boxes or on the green.

The registration fee for golfers is $75 per golfer and includes green fees, range balls, a $10 gift certificate to the pro shop, cart, beverages, meal and prizes. There also will be raffle prizes, including a basketball signed by Bill Self, coach of the Kansas University men’s basketball team.

A picnic-style meal will be at 5 p.m., after the tournament.
