Why Thomas?

To the editor:

Is there some good reason the Journal-World continues to publish the divisive and close-minded rhetoric of Cal Thomas? I know conservatives who are against the Iraq war and liberals who are against abortion. I know conservatives who are atheist and liberals who are devoted Christians. I know gay Republicans and anti-gay-marriage Democrats. These lines of Mr. Thomas’ are not as neatly drawn as he would like to believe.

I suspect that the majority of Lawrence citizens are fully aware of this and, therefore, wonder what value Thomas’ columns are to this community? Surely there are other columnists who are willing to explore the dynamics of a political system that allows for such complexity. I, for one, would prefer my subscription to support that kind of editorial commentary.

Mary Wharff,
