Willing to serve

To the editor:

I would like to respond to Ms. Haehl’s comments in her Aug. 28 letter to the editor. As the wife of a member of our Air National Guard, I believe that a comment is needed.

Ms. Haehl, I can assure you that my husband and I are just as concerned about the overcrowded classrooms and the availability of mental health care as you. We also go to bed each night knowing that sometime during the night we could get the phone call that will mean another separation for us. In the last eight weeks, my husband has been gone six of them on various missions serving our country. We are the lucky ones. We have not faced the years of separation that some military families are facing. Every time we are apart my husband loses time with his daughter that no amount of money can buy back.

It is important that you understand, people do not join the National Guard because the governor is proposing increased pay and benefits. People are not willing to risk their lives or their loved ones for any amount of money. We do it because it is our sacrifice for what I believe is a truly great nation.

So tonight when you go to bed safe and secure, Ms. Haehl, do so knowing that we are also going to bed ready to make that sacrifice whenever we are called to do so. Believe me, no amount of money would make that easier. You don’t have to support the war, but please support those willing to serve.

Chandra Dunbar,

Lawrence
