Much holiday travel expected
Lawrence and the nation are ready to celebrate the last major holiday weekend of the summer, and a record 34.1 million people are expected to take advantage of it and travel more than 50 miles, according to Kansas AAA.
Improved consumer confidence, widespread discount airfares and increased confidence in travel security are key factors spurring the travel interest, association officials said.
At midweek motorists were finding the average price for regular gasoline in the Lawrence area at $1.84 and a state average of $1.83, association surveys found. Nationally, the average was $1.86. That could increase slightly over the weekend, officials said.
Clinton Lake State Park is preparing for the usual crowd of about 3,000 people for the weekend, manager Jerry Schecher said.
“We’re just trying to make sure all the facilities are ready,” Schecher said. “You never know what is going to happen, especially when it comes to the weather.”
The National Weather Service in Topeka was predicting a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday night through Monday with high temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s.
All area city, state and federal government offices will be closed Monday. There will be no classes at Kansas University and Haskell Indian Nations University, and campus offices also will be closed. At KU, Anschutz and Watson libraries will be open from 1 p.m. to midnight.
Lawrence Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed Monday, and there will be no recreational classes. Eagle Bend Golf Course, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will accept tee times in advance.
Monday will be the last day the Lawrence Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open for the season. It will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., as will the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive.
There will be no trash collection Monday in Lawrence, and yard waste will not be picked up.
The Lawrence Transit System will not operate Monday, nor will the Lawrence Bus Co.
The U.S. Postal Service will deliver only Express Mail on Monday.
The Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., will be closed Sunday and Monday.
Douglas County Senior Services will be closed Monday. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will deliver.
The Journal-World will be published and delivered Monday, and the circulation office will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. USA Today will not be published.
