Beside the point
To the editor:
The fact that President Bush is conservative, a Republican or a Christian has absolutely nothing to do with his qualifications for office. We have had conservative presidents before, and we survived. We’ve had Republican presidents who served with distinction. We have had presidents who also professed to be Christians, who held to their faith but didn’t use it to advance their political careers. And as for disliking Christians I believe that Christians who dislike Christians outnumber nonbelievers who dislike them.
I just believe his policies are wrong. I believe having created the largest deficits in our history is wrong. I believe that placing the tax burden on the middle class is wrong. I believe that not fully funding the No Child Left Behind Act is wrong.
I assume some agree with Rush Limbaugh’s comments about Lawrence. I’m almost tempted to use that well-known conservative refrain “if you don’t like it, leave,” but since I believe you have the right to your opinion, I won’t say it. Please go ahead; dislike Lawrence all you want. I think most people living here like Lawrence. I think Lawrence has survived and will continue to survive despite us heathen liberals.
As for Rush, I wonder: Does he still believe all drug addicts belong in jail? It must be rough on poor Rush, being what he has despised in others. I think I would hesitate to take him seriously as a spokesman.
Larry M. Brizendine,
Lawrence
