Border patrol

To the editor:

Kris Kobach needs to do his homework and quit promoting a plan to have the military patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

This was tried in the late 1990s, and it proved that the U.S. military doesn’t have the proper training to be a border patrol. It was a short trial period because the U.S. military shot and killed a 15-year-old boy who was a U.S. citizen and was herding his goats.

The outcome of this fiasco was that the powers that be in the military decided that they weren’t qualified for the training necessary for border patrol and that it should be left to the Border Patrol itself to hire and train additional agents for patrolling the Mexican border. Additional agents were hired and trained, but the U.S. government didn’t provide enough funds to hire enough staff to patrol the entire border.
