Game traffic

To the editor:

Four, give or take a few tenths, miles from Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium to Sixth and Lawrence Avenue took one hour and 25 minutes on Oct. 9.

We parked in the “permit parking” area southeast of Memorial Stadium for the KSU-KU game. First problem: We arrived at the lot at 5:40, sadly unaware that they did not keep count of the numbers of vehicles they let in. The lot was packed. We ultimately created a new “space” where none was marked as available.

Circa 10:10 p.m. or so, we commenced the process of getting out of the lot. For minutes mounting upon minutes, we never moved. Probably 15 minutes after we were able to get in line, we crept along in stop, stop and go fashion. There was no traffic control person at the south end of the lot.

So, we finally get on the feeder street to Jayhawk Boulevard. However, when we got there, we found that barricades would not permit us to turn right or go ahead on Jayhawk Boulevard, which would have taken us to Naismith, to 15th street and to Iowa.

But no. We were put on, is it Indiana(?), and again crept toward 19th street. From there we made slow progress to Iowa.

We are joyous beyond description that we defeated KSU and we would all hope for more full-stadium games. But, in the planning for the growth of our football program, shouldn’t we provide a traffic plan which does NOT funnel masses of cars into a massive funnel?

What thousands of us had to endure that Saturday night is unacceptable.
