Fond memories

To the editor:

This past weekend, the Lawrence High School Centennial Class of 1974 celebrated its 30th reunion. We were fortunate to have a great turnout, and we shared many good memories. There were three highlights from the reunion that stood out for me.

First, Lawrence has never looked so robust and vibrant. It has been awhile since I last visited, but the return visit made me proud to be from this gorgeous community. Second, touring Lawrence High School reinforced what diverse opportunities we had as students growing up in the early ’70s and solidified my respect for teachers who really cared about us. Finally, 30 years is a long time ago, and reasons for attending or not attending the reunion are very personal. However, what resonated for me was the kindness and generosity of my fellow classmates. I witnessed genuine selflessness that 18-year-olds cannot see.

Each of these highlights reminded me of how lucky I was to grow up in this special place in Kansas. Our 30th Reunion Yearbook ended with this quote from lyricist Stephen Schwartz. “Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”
