Right to speak

To the editor:

This letter is in response to the “No violence” letter in the Oct. 12 Journal-World. While I agree with the authors that violence is inexcusable and deserves to be punished, I am appalled that they would equate citizens practicing their right to speak out against public officials with violence.

Judges are public servants, and we, as Douglas County residents, have the responsibility to regularly decide whether they deserve to retain their jobs. And, we have the right to criticize their decisions and speak out against them. Similarly, the supporters of Judge Paula Martin have the right to defend her. To question these rights, and to attempt to silence either side of this debate, only serves to hinder the democratic process. In the end, both sides will be heard and voters will make an informed decision.
