Racing teens

To the editor:

I’m glad that Lawrence police did something so quickly in regard to the teens drag racing. Maybe the next time teenagers want to brag and show how hot their cars are, they will remember the fate of their peers. What are 15- and 16-year-olds doing driving these kinds of cars, anyway? My two teenagers get reliable transportation, not showy cars.

If teenagers want to race, there are places that are made for that that are organized and not where there is traffic; Topeka and Kansas City have teen races.

I believe the teens should have their driver’s licenses revoked until they turn 21 as part of their punishment.

Too bad Lawrence doesn’t still have the dragstrip; of course, it’s too bad Lawrence doesn’t still have a lot of things for our kids to do to help keep them entertained, but that’s another story.

I’m just glad that the girls in Whitney Laudick’s car are going to heal; it could have been worse. I’m not stupid enough to think that this will stop street racing — it’s something that’s been around forever — but the next time teenagers decide they want to show how fast their cars can go, just remember the next time it might be fatal, and that is something that you won’t want on your conscience for the rest of your life.

Terry Parker,

Lawrence
