Fun rivalry?

To the editor:

This past Saturday, I attended the homecoming parade at Kansas University. I am an avid K-State fan, but am also proud to say that the majority of my family attended KU. I chose K-State over KU because KU didn’t have what I desired to major in.

I have lived in the Lawrence area all of my life, but came away from the parade feeling very ashamed that I do. I felt like I had been thrown into a den of lions when I was on Jayhawk Boulevard. I had on my K-State attire and was treated with the most disrespect I’ve ever received in my life. People tossed their cigarette butts at me and said very unkind things. Even small children were being encouraged by their parents to say words that should not come out of anyone’s mouth, let alone a child’s.

What has happened to the fun rivalries of the past? I fully intend to never encourage my children or grandchildren to attend KU. Besides being a college known for great academics, shouldn’t we also be teaching good sportsmanship and respect for other people, even if they aren’t a Jayhawk?
