Bush signals

To the editor:

George W. Bush has made his opposition to changes in position and “mixed signals” quite clear. What are we to make of his own message, then? After all, this is the president who said in September 2001 that he would capture Osama bin Laden “dead or alive” (Sept. 17, 2001). Yet six months later he said, “I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him … I truly am not that concerned about him” (March 17, 2002).

On Aug. 30, 2004, Mr. Bush said of the so-called war on terrorism, “I don’t think you can win it.” Yet the very next day he said, “Make no mistake about it … we will win it.” I would suggest to Mr. Bush that he remove the log from his own eye before worrying about the speck in his neighbor’s eye.
