KU student killed in one-car wreck

A part-time Kansas University student from Overland Park was one of two people killed early Sunday in a one-vehicle accident in Olathe.

KU officials said John Fulbright, 21, was a sophomore at KU. He and Eric Richards, a 21-year-old Kansas State University student, were killed in an accident at 12:17 a.m. Sunday.

A news release issued by the Olathe Police Department said Richards was driving a 1993 Mazda RX-7 at “what is believed to be a high rate of speed” on 119th Street between Kansas City Road and Renner Road when the car struck a utility pole, killing both men.

Fulbright was a 2001 graduate of Olathe East High School and had not declared a major, KU officials said. He recently had started working at the Student Recreation Fitness Center as a floor hockey and volleyball referee.

Fulbright is the second KU student in a week killed in an auto accident. Bethany Weidensaul, a Wichita junior, was killed Nov. 23 in a wreck on the Kansas Turnpike near El Dorado.

Weather

Light snow expected to end this morning

Light snow should cover the ground this morning but the drive to work and school shouldn’t be too eventful, according to 6News meteorologist Matt Sayers.

“It’s going to be light snow; only about an inch,” Sayers said late Monday night. “It should be insignificant as far as traffic.”

The heavier snows should stay in north-central Kansas, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Snow started falling in earnest about 8:30 p.m. Monday. About that time a car overturned on the westbound exit ramp to the west Lawrence turnpike toll gate area off Interstate 70. One person was injured and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital but no other details were available. It was not known if weather was a factor in the accident.

Douglas County remained under a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. today. Light snow could fall again this morning but accumulation should be no more than an inch, Sayers said.
