The Safe Winter Walkways project is now recruiting volunteers to assist Lawrence senior citizens or persons with disabilities with snow shoveling this winter season. Volunteers will be matched with a senior for the season and are asked to remove snow from the public sidewalk and a path from the front door to the street after each snowfall. Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center has published its annual How to Help at the Holidays brochure, which provides information on many volunteer and holiday donation opportunities in the community. The brochure details how volunteers may assist different charitable organizations during the holiday season, adopt-a-family and adopt-a-child for the holidays programs, and when volunteers are needed to assist with free holiday community meals. The How to Help at the Holidays brochure is available by calling the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030, or by visiting any Lawrence-area Capitol Federal Savings branch or the United Way Center, 2518 Ridge Court.
  • Heartland Medical Clinic needs volunteers who are medically trained, such as RNs, LPNs, CNAs and other medical assistants, to check in patients, take vital statistics and work with clinic doctors in patient instruction and care. Heartland Medical Clinic is a Christian ministry that provides free medical care for uninsured patients. The staff are all volunteers. Shifts last two to three hours, are flexible and available weekly or monthly. For more information, call Amy Bertrand, 841-7297.
  • The Jayhawk Support Services for Elders program is seeking volunteers to provide financial management assistance to seniors 60 or older. Volunteers will help with bill paying, checkbook balancing and asset management. Volunteers are screened, trained and bonded. Training sessions include financial and legal issues affecting seniors. Volunteers who wish to sign up for training or receive more information should call Ted Tennehill, JSSE project coordinator, at (785) 354-8531.
