Lawrence to get 1 to 2 inches of snow

Snow expected to last through morning, says meteorologist

Lawrence was being dusted by snow late tonight. And when it’s all over, the city should see 1 to 2 inches of snow, with some areas getting as much as 3 inches by Tuesday afternoon, says Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

As of 10:15 p.m., the city was getting some accumulations already, with the most starting to pile up on cars, decks and porches. The Lawrence area will see short periods of light snow during the morning and up until about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sayers said.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Douglas County until 6 a.m. Tuesday and a snow advisory for Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties until 4 p.m. Tuesday

“I don’t think it’s going to be too much of a problem (in the morning),” Sayers said.

A storm system that was expected to bring sleet, then ankle-deep snow to Lawrence earlier today dissipated before it could get to this area.

“It just kind of fell apart as it ran into some drier air around us,” Sayers said. “I think things around here are going to be relatively quiet throughout the afternoon and evening.”

Sayers said that the band of snow expected for Lawrence today stopped just west of Topeka. Concordia reported 2 inches and Junction City reported 1 inch by this afternoon, he said.

The overnight low was expected to fall to 29 by early Tuesday morning. Tuesday’s high will reach 36.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 22, with Wednesday’s high reaching 40 under partly cloudy skies.
