School not failing

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the story about South Junior High’s inadequate facilities. If one only glanced at the headlines, “School fails at every turn,” it would appear that South is providing an inadequate education for its students. This is far from the truth. South provides an excellent education for its students through the hard work of its dedicated staff who often work in substandard conditions.

As a school, South has met the federally mandated “adequate yearly progress” requirements and continues to develop interventions to help all students reach their potential.

Upon opening the Journal-World early Monday morning before work, my stomach did a flip-flop when seeing that big headline on the front page. I just hope that your readers had time that morning to read the remainder of the article to realize that the “poor performance” had to do with our facilities, not our students or staff.
