To the editor:
I would like to respond to your headline for the article "School fails at every turn: South Junior High a textbook case of poor performance, officials say" (Nov. 22). The headline does not do the well-written article justice. In behalf of students, parents and staff of South Junior High School, I commend Sarah Fox for writing an informative article. The only concern we have is that the headline is terribly misleading. Patrons should not confuse academic performance and poor facilities.
Academic performance is a priority at South. Our students work to their potential, and our teachers creatively deliver the curriculum which challenges our students. We have several instructional strategies in place to assist those students who struggle. Like the other Lawrence junior high schools, we met the expectations of average yearly progress as set by the No Child Left Behind initiative.
I welcome any community member or organization who would like to tour South Junior High School so that they may view firsthand the facility challenges that our students and teachers face.
Russell L. Blackbird,
SJHS principal,
Lawrence
