Target wasn't slated to open until 6 a.m. today. But that didn't keep people from lining up outside in preparation of holiday and personal shopping sprees.

Tina Freeman and Pam Wyrick, sisters, arrived about 5 a.m. at the south Lawrence store.

"People probably think we're crazy, but it's a lot of fun for us," Freeman said as she waited outside in the pre-dawn darkness.

Throughout the city this morning, the smell of commerce filled the air as bargain shoppers cashed in on special deals at stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, JC Penney's and Best Buy. All the stores opened at 6 a.m. and had packed parking lots by the time doors opened.

When Target's doors opened slightly before 6 a.m., people walked quickly inside. Some people went from walking to full out sprinting. Most were heading to electronics. Others were going for the toy department.

Like thousands of people across the country, the local early-bird shoppers were doing some pushing and shoving as they jockeyed for position on the traditional first day of the Christmas shopping season.
