Lawrence warming up for holiday
Lawrence got its second helping of winter overnight — not more snow, but a blast of arctic air that could chill every holiday turkey in the city.
“We are staying chilly today for Thanksgiving,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. The temperature dropped to a low of 16 this morning, nearly reaching a 108-year-old record for this date set back in 1898, when it dropped to 15, Schack said.
By 8 a.m., the sun was shining and temperatures had risen to 24.
“If you head out this morning, you’re going to have to scrape that car,” Schack said, noting there were some slick spots on the roadways where melting snow had iced over again.
But clouds will begin moving in from the west and the temperature was expected to rise into the 40s by noon, reaching a high of 45 by this afternoon, she said. Snowfall on the ground is keeping the temperature a few degrees below average, she said.
Officially, Lawrence received 4 inches from Wednesday morning’s snowfall, although there were some reports of 5 to 6 inches on decks, porches and patios, she said. The Kansas City metropolitan area had 6 to 8 inches, she said.
Temperatures won’t be as cold overnight. And you won’t have to worry about scraping your car windows if you’re heading out Friday to participate in the first unofficial day of the Christmas shopping season.
“Just go ahead and shop ’til you drop because there’s not going to be any precipitation,” Schack said. Friday’s temperature will start at 35 degrees in the morning, reaching a high of 52 by mid afternoon, she said.
On Friday night, there will be some rain and snow just to the north and east of the area in Iowa. The National Weather Service says the chance for precipitation is 30 percent in the Lawrence area.
“We are just on the very edge of the activity,” Schack said. Lawrence could see some scattered rain and possibly some snowflakes from that storm system, she said.
“We might have a few flakes of snow on Saturday morning,” she said.
Saturday’s morning low will be 33, rising to a high of 45 by the afternoon, under partly cloudy skies, she said.
