Women’s sports

To the editor:

When I saw Thursday's headline in the Sports section, "Hockeytown, Kansas," I was once again reminded that our local newspaper continues to assume that only sports in which men participate are worthy of major news coverage, and women's sports coverage is treated as filler. A few weeks ago, the LHS gymnastics team became state champions. I repeat, STATE CHAMPIONS, and Free State won third at state.

These are incredible accomplishments by very talented and gifted ladies, yet our local newspaper printed a very small article in the newspaper. I did not notice the article and did not know of their accomplishment until a letter to the editor brought it to my attention. Gymnastics is not a large spectator sport like football; however, it deserves recognition in our local newspaper commensurate to other state champions at our high schools. I am insulted that the members of the sports staff at the Journal-World think this news is not something people would enjoying reading. Shame on you!

Also, the LHS volleyball team did not "settle for second." It earned second place at a very competitive level and had to beat some outstanding teams to earn this accomplishment. This is the greatest achievement in LHS volleyball since Free State opened, and yet the headline was disrespectful. Do not demean the players' accomplishment by saying they settled. Please recognize that there are a lot people in our community extremely proud of all our young athletes, and we want to read about them in our local newspaper.

Cindy Riling,

Lawrence
