A 21-year-old Kansas University student died Tuesday night from injuries she received in a traffic accident along the Kansas Turnpike near Wichita, according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority.
Bethany Weidensaul, a junior from Wichita, received severe injuries when her car ran into the back of a semi tractor-trailer on the turnpike in Butler County, according to a turnpike dispatcher.
The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes at mile marker 64, which is about seven miles south of El Dorado, the dispatcher said. The dispatcher said the semi driver had slowed down his vehicle on the roadway because of an accident in front of him, where a car had overturned. Weidensaul's car, which was also traveling south, slid sideways into the back of the semi's trailer.
The roadway was slick from rain, the dispatcher said.
Weidensaul was transported from the scene to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, where she was pronounced dead, the dispatcher said.
According to KU officials, Weidensaul was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Funeral services are pending.
"On behalf of the entire KU community, I want to express my profound sorrow at the death of Bethany Weidensaul," said KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway. "This tragic accident fills us with sadness, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends."
