Civil service point

To the editor:

I would like to comment on the stories you run in your newspaper regarding the alternative to civil service at Kansas University. Repeatedly, you have comments from the Kansas Association of Public Employees and another entity, the Pro-Civil Service Coalition, both of which are against changing the system because they fear the loss of job security. You have consistently neglected to interview and present viewpoints from any classified staff, including members of the Classified Senate, who support the alternative. As a result, the articles you publish make it appear as though there is no support from KU employees for the alternative, which is false.

As a member of the Classified Senate, I can tell you that our body has worked on this alternative to civil service diligently and with the best interests of classified staff in mind. We did put this alternative to the civil service to a vote among classified staff at KU, and it was supported in that vote.

In summation, it is imperative for all issues reported in this paper to present viewpoints from both sides. I hope that in the future you will see fit to include opinions and information from those who support the alternative to civil service so that your readership will know there are those of us who support this measure and why we have spent so much thought and effort in presenting an alternative that works for everyone, not just the KU administration and the state of Kansas.

Angel Gillaspie,

KU Classified Senate
