To the editor:
The question online in the many blogs is "what did the people of Fallujah do to deserve this onslaught of American fighters?" Try as I might, I still cannot settle in my mind the reasons we are there in the first place, let alone the killing of hundreds of "insurgents." What are they insurging against or for? Who is the enemy, the people we want to be free and democratic?
What is the purpose of all of this? First it was to find WMD -- none there. Then to depose a dictator who was ruthless -- he is deposed. What now? Let's free the people? Are we freeing them by killing them? Who is Iraq a threat to? The United States? I doubt it. To Israel? Let Israel fight its own problems -- the Israelis seem to do that well.
The killing in Iraq will not bring Iraq into peace with the world but instill in each Iraqi a long-lasting and deeply entrenched hatred for America and what we stand for. Come to think of it, what do we stand for these days?
