Wait on tunes

To the editor:

Here’s one for the record books: A week-and-a-half before Thanksgiving (not to mention over a month until Christmas itself), radio stations have already begun playing nonstop Christmas music! With various area stations already having jumped aboard Santa’s sleigh and others soon to follow, I can’t help but want them to delay this relentless seasonal play list until at least after Thanksgiving, the traditional starting-point of the holiday season.

“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…” No, it’s not, except for the toy industry’s advertising and marketing executives. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas …” Yes, trust me, I will, but on Dec. 25, not Nov. 15.

Now don’t get me wrong — I love the cheery, spirited holiday tunes just as much as the next person — but after a month straight of listening to “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Feliz Navidad,” numerous other listeners and I will be ready to stuff Rudolph down a coal-filled stocking and throw Frosty in that chestnut-roasting open fire. Besides, radio stations must realize a large percentage of their audience is non-Christian — this needs to be taken into consideration and respected.

So please, please, PLEASE, for our ears’ sake, let us be able to enjoy the music of the holidays when they do indeed roll around.
