High-speed chase ends in southwest Lawrence

A driver reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour as he led police on a chase Sunday night that started near Lawrence Memorial Hospital and ended when his car got stuck in a ditch in southwest Lawrence. In the car, police found suspected methamphetamine and materials commonly used to make the drug, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

The pursuit began about 11:50 p.m. when officers went to the 300 block of Maine Street to try to serve an arrest warrant on a 37-year-old Lawrence man. When he drove down the street, officers pulled behind his Buick, but he didn’t stop.

He drove 40 mph to 50 mph along roads including Crestline Drive, Century Drive and Schwarz Road. When he reached Kasold Drive, he accelerated to between 90 mph and 100 mph, Ward said.

He and a passenger tried to flee when the car stopped in the 2600 block of Crossgate Drive, Ward said. Police arrested the driver and a passenger, a 32-year-old Ponca City, Okla., man.

No charges were filed Monday.

Investigation

Police receive report of flasher near campus

An 81-year-old woman told Lawrence police she saw a man exposing himself and masturbating outside her window about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Dan Ward, Lawrence Police spokesman, would not release the exact address but said the incident happened near campus between Ninth and 19th streets and between Iowa and Mississippi streets.

The woman described the man as a white male with a tan baseball cap, tan pants and a black or tan jacket.

County commission

Action delayed on road request

Douglas County commissioners delayed action on a request to add an entrance point along a road that runs along the north side of Lone Star Lake.

Phil and Kerry Metsker want an entrance onto Route E-1 for agricultural purposes. Topeka attorney Vernon Jarboe, who is representing the couple, said the Metskers were entitled to the entrance because their land is by the road, which he said is considered a public road.

Commission Chairman Charles Jones, however, said there was some question as to whether the road was public. He and the other commissioners said they had questions they wanted answered by the county attorney before making a decision.

The commission expects to review the matter by Dec. 6.
