To the editor:
It is likely that not many readers in Lawrence are aware that in addition to the two official sistering relationships with Eutin and Hiratsuka there is also an ongoing sister relationship between the village of Papaturro, El Salvador, and members of the Lawrence community. Papaturro, being a rural village in a less developed country, it is of necessity a different relationship.
In Papaturro, as in Kansas, they are aware that their children probably cannot prosper by continuing in farming. Education is important when seeking alternatives. Since they are cash-poor and the nearest high school is in Suchitoto, a town 12 miles distant, they ask us for help in sending some of their youth to high school.
Saturday evening, Nov. 13, Kansas University Latin American Solidarity members capably organized and served a fund-raising meal to aid Papaturro youth in pursuit of education. The event was a great success with 175 or more people enjoying a wide variety of cuisine from countries as diverse as Brazil and Mexico.
The flavors were delicious; ordinary foods seldom tasted so good. Even though I was near the end of the line, there was still tasty food. Bananas never before tasted so good. We enjoyed music of Peru and Brazil.
Congratulations to Latin American Solidarity members who sold tickets, cooked, washed dishes and served. The $800 netted will enable four Salvadoran youths to attend high school next year.
Mark Larson,
Lawrence
