Immediate volunteer needs

  • Meals on Wheels needs drivers and substitute drivers. Volunteers deliver noon meals five days a week to elderly, disabled and homebound people. Each route of eight to 10 homes takes 45 minutes to one hour, and volunteers can serve one day per week or more if available. Call Kim Cullis at 979-1440 to sign up.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County has 65 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister and a great need for male mentors. Volunteers and youths spend three to four hours each week developing a friendship over a period of at least one year. For more information, call Becki Carl Stutz at 843-7359.
  • Trinity Respite Care’s attendant care volunteers help elderly clients with a variety of activities such as basic supervision, companionship, transportation to doctor appointments, shopping, light housework, meal preparation and yard work. Volunteers are needed to help fill these needs and to relieve clients’ caregivers by allowing them time away to attend to their personal needs. For more information, contact Kelly Evans at 842-3159.
  • For high school students in National Honor Society and other organizations, as well as for students applying for college scholarships, community volunteering experience is frequently required. A great way teens can become familiar with ways to volunteer is to participate in the Youth Volunteer Council. This group, sponsored by the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, organizes several volunteer projects per month, giving youths the chance to learn about community services and volunteer opportunities. For more information about the council, call Mary Thompson, 865-5030.
