State asked to end investments in Sudan
Topeka -- A community activist is calling on state officials to get rid of any pension investments in companies doing business in Sudan.
Sonny Scroggins, president of the Kansas chapter of the National Action Network, told trustees of the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System there were many incidents of U.S. businesses being complicit in the violence in the African country.
"We must stop the suffering and deep pain caused by our mutual funds and direct investments," Scroggins said last week.
Glenn Deck, executive secretary of KPERS, said it was difficult to determine the extent of pension fund investments with companies that might do business with Sudan. Deck said the trustees took no action on Scroggins' request.
