To the editor:
I believe constructing an indoor ice rink in Lawrence would open up many opportunities our community lacks. For one, an ice rink would provide a safe and fun atmosphere for adults and children of all ages to socialize, pursue ice sports or have a good time as a family. Such a rink would eliminate the hassle of commuting for Lawrence hockey or skating enthusiasts.
Building a rink would also improve Lawrence's tourism by drawing people from nearby cities to the rink because commuting to Lawrence would be shorter as opposed to Kansas City's ice rinks. Another thing that would benefit would be our economy as a community, because most people that would travel to Lawrence to use the rink would support other businesses such as restaurants and hotels during tournaments and trips.
Contrary to popular belief, the building of an indoor rink would not cost more money than the city could afford. Constructing an ice rink, four dressing/locker rooms, two bathrooms, a concession area and parking for 150 would cost approximately $2 million. This is compared to the $25 million to $30 million for recent renovations at Memorial Stadium.
City organizations such as the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department would benefit as well. By assigning them a certain number of hours to use the facility, children could participate in sports that have not been available in Lawrence. Practices, tournaments and lessons could be part of a summer recreation program to keep kids out of trouble while having a good time. In the end, nobody loses.
