To the editor:
On the front of the Nov. 5 Journal-World, Mr. Bush spoke of reuniting the country and listed his goals for his second term. One of these goals has been a threat through his first term and the opposition of this goal should stand firm.
Mr. Bush is still trying to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. My earth science textbook stated that there's less than a three-year supply of oil in this area, and yet there's a vastly important ecosystem that could possibly be ruined by the greed and short-sightedness that has plagued the Bush administration in the first four years. When Mr. Bush has energy executives in his pocket, how can there be objectivity?
Car makers like VW, Daimler-Chrysler, and BMW all use direct-rail injection diesel engines that perform like regular fuel cars without many of the problems that plagued earlier diesel cars. Low-sulfur fuel will be available next year that's environmentally-friendly. Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney both are like addicts when it comes to energy policy. One's addicted to "Big Oil" and the other's addicted to "Big Coal." Between the two, I don't see anything changing. This means that when the environment and the economy are in further shambles in two years, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney and their supporters will be the ones responsible for putting this whole country on the Titanic.
Mike Ford,
Bonner Springs
