To the editor:
I watched in dismay as a possible defensive holding penalty morphed into a phantom offensive pass interference call. I am not a KU graduate or fan, just a retired football coach here in Texas. I thought this was about as bad a call as I had seen in a long time until I watched the LSU-Alabama game and saw an obvious defensive pass interference call go "uncalled." Both were critical in the outcomes of the games, but Kansas was the recipient of what coaches call a "phantom call," which usually is driven by an official looking for something to call rather than officiating the game. If Coach Mangino is fined, so be it if that is the rule and if it is objectively judged that he committed the infraction "by rule." My concern is the official who committed the "phantom call" will be able to quietly slide away in anonymity, protected and not evaluated for such a poor judgment error. Meanwhile, coaches and fans continue to lose confidence in the integrity and ability of Big 12 officials.
