To the editor:
I have been reading about the problem with student fans of Kansas University basketball standing at the games. I also am a fan of Kansas basketball and other sports played by these wonderful student athletes.
I am a traditionalist, but also a realist, and believe the student fans are ones that should be given the priority seating closest to the basketball court to stand and cheer for their team. The long-time contributors and faculty should be given priority seating on the next level around the court.
Many universities around the country, including Duke University, have a tremendous section of students around the court who never sit down and they are constantly cheering. The visiting teams are very much aware of their presence.
I am aware the Williams Fund relies on contributions from long-time alumni and fans, I just offer a different perspective, and we must remember this is a sporting event where standing and cheering is expected and wanted by the participants of the sport.
