Commissioner begins re-election campaign

City Commissioner Sue Hack on Tuesday officially began her campaign for a second term on the commission.

Hack earlier this month confirmed that she intended to run for another term on the commission, but on Tuesday she filed the necessary paperwork with the city clerk's office. Hack also addressed a crowd of about 60 supporters at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Candidates have until Jan. 25 to file for one of three seats on the commission. In addition to Hack, Commissioners David Dunfield and David Schauner's terms also are coming to an end. Dunfield has announced he will not seek re-election. Schauner has not announced his plans.

If seven or more candidates file for the three seats, which are all at-large, there will be a primary on March 1. The general election will be April 5.

Four development proposals approved

City commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting approved the following development proposals:

  • a rezoning of 38 acres from single family residential to planned residential development. The property is located north of Peterson Road, near Monterey Way. Exact plans for the development haven't been filed but developers said it likely would contain a mix of single-family and duplex homes that would be both rented and sold.
  • a rezoning of approximately 60 acres north of West Sixth Street near George Williams Way to allow for a mix of single family, apartments and duplexes.
  • a rezoning and preliminary plan for approximately five acres at the southwest corner of 15th Street and Haskell Avenue. The development will include approximately 30 single-family homes.
  • a use permitted upon review for the Fountains Retirement Center at the southeast corner of Clinton Parkway and Inverness Drive. The development would include a mix of independent and assisted living facilities, a nursing home for dementia care and villa-style retirement homes. The project would be developed in phases between 2005 and 2011.
