Slain Guardsman honored at funeral

Services were Tuesday for Spc. Don Clary, 21, a member of the Kansas Army National Guard who was killed in a car bombing in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Clinton Lee Wisdom, 39, of Atchison, also was killed in the bombing.

Wisdom's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Atchison. Burial will be at the Walnut Grove Cemetery south of St. Joseph, Mo.

Police

100 citations, 1 arrest made during patrol

The Lawrence Police Department's traffic unit issued 100 citations and made one drunken-driving arrest during a "saturation patrol" between 5 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

All seven of the traffic unit's officers were on duty citywide throughout the patrol watching for traffic violations and erratic driving. Sgt. Dan Ward, a department spokesman, said the goal of the patrol was to slow drivers down with a period of heavy traffic enforcement.

Nominations sought for educator award

Lawrence Mayor Mike Rundle is encouraging students, parents and teachers to nominate an educator for the Fall 2004 Mayor's Excellence in Education Award.

Individuals making a nomination are asked to tell the mayor why the educator is being nominated and to describe the educator's community involvement.

Educators serving preschools, elementary schools, junior high schools or high schools may be nominated. Nomination forms are available at www.lawrenceks.org or in the city manager's office on the fourth floor of City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

The nomination deadline for the fall semester is Dec. 31.

Sesquicentennial

City's 150th birthday banners for sale

Banners commemorating Lawrence's 150th birthday are now on sale at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second St.

The banners, which were hung on downtown light poles during the sesquicentennial celebration, are $25 each. Checks can be made payable to the Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
