Gymnastics feat

To the editor:

I am a 2004 graduate of Lawrence High School and was a member of the gymnastics team all three of my years at LHS. Recently, the LHS gymnastics team won a state championship. This marked the first state championship for any women’s gymnastics team in Lawrence and the first state championship in any sport for LHS since 2000.

Why is it, despite all this, the only recognition the team received from the Lawrence Journal-World was a small article in the bottom corner of the sports page? The only picture it contained was a small school picture of one of the gymnasts.

When the LHS baseball team won state in 2000, the article covering them contained several pictures and a large headline. The same thing occurred when the Free State boys swimming and diving team won state in May. A state championship is a state championship, no matter what sport it is for. Winning the 99th state championship for Lawrence High should be no less important, whether it is won in gymnastics or any other sport.

I am going to offer my congratulations to the gymnastics team, since no one else seems to want to do that. To Mallory, Meredith, Chelsey, Kara and Jessica: You girls did an awesome job at the meet and definitely earned your win. Hopefully in the future people will recognize this more often.

It’s a great day to be a lion!

Ellie Lloyd,

Lawrence
