Sin tax syntax

To the editor:

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger want to unite my money with insurance for indigents and underpaid employees. I, for one, don't mind giving a (voluntary) hand up, but am repulsed by another government hand out. Sandy states that, "I believe we have a moral responsibility to find a way to provide coverage that's affordable and accessible to all. Access to health care should be a basic right." Sorry, Sandy, it isn't.

Isn't it also nice that these ladies of leadership want to impose a moral responsibility on my choices in life? As I read our constitutions (both state and federal) I see nothing in there that says medical insurance is a basic right. I also happen to know that anyone can go to any hospital and receive "basic health care." Make no mistake Kansas: Mrs. Sebelius wants your money one way or the other. She will get it through casinos or Camels.

Why doesn't Kathleen make a proposal that the children of all "illegal immigrants" pay out-of-state (or out-of-country) tuition? Why doesn't she propose a reduction in the salaries of school administrators or athletic directors? Why doesn't she propose a tax on abortion doctors? Or, simply tax the Democrats who chastised President Bush for his tax cuts?

For Kathleen's and Sandy's proposal to work, they will have to hope people will continue to smoke and that a new generation of smokers will come along so that their sin tax syntax will stay in effect for years to come.
