A Douglas County jury this afternoon found Lafayette Cosby guilty of first-degree premeditated murder in last spring's shooting death of Robert Martin.
Jurors began deliberations about 11 a.m., after hearing closing arguments from both sides in the murder trial earlier this morning.Sentencing for Cosby has been scheduled for Dec. 7.
Cosby, 25, was accused of shooting Martin, a 28-year-old Lawrence resident, during the early morning hours of April 4 at a small party inside an apartment at Jefferson Commons.
Dave Zabel, Douglas County assistant district attorney, has argued that the shooting was unprovoked and unjustified. Martin was shot three times as he sat on a couch.
But Cosby, who took the stand Thursday, explained he shot Martin in self-defense, after seeing him fidgeting with a gun concealed under a leather jacket.
