Winter-like weather hit the Lawrence area this morning, with even colder temperatures expected Saturday and Sunday mornings.

"There's some patchy frost out there, but not the hard freeze we were expecting," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Overnight, clouds blanketed Lawrence and kept temperatures from falling below the 28-degree mark, which is the "hard freeze" or "hard frost" temperature point that kills off most seasonal plants and flowers for the year.

"We're about 10 degrees colder than we were yesterday," Schack said. "Grab your coat and bundle up."

As of 8:30 a.m., Lawrence's temperature was 33 degrees with a wind chill of 27. The temperature was expected to warm up today to a high of 46, under mostly cloudy skies and northeast winds 5 to 10 mph. The average high is 55 and the low is 37 for this date.

If you're headed out to an area high school football game tonight, the temperature will be 40 degrees about 7 p.m., with 5- to 10-mph east winds, Schack said.

"It's going to get chilly again tonight," she said. "Make sure you take your coat with you."

Temperatures will continue to fall Friday night to a low of 27 by early Saturday morning, with 3- to 5-mph easterly winds, she said.

The temperature will climb to 40 degrees by the 11 a.m. kickoff time for Saturday's Kansas University football game with Texas at KU's Memorial Stadium, Schack said. Saturday's temperature will warm up to 50 degrees under partly cloudy skies, she said.

Then temperatures will fall Saturday night to a low of 32 by early Sunday morning, she said. Sunday's high will be 51, under partly cloudy skies.
